Why This Matters

Unsafe behaviors, such as speeding, distraction, and failure to follow traffic rules, contribute to the majority of road crashes in Rwanda. However, safer roads also depend on how infrastructure is planned, designed, and managed.
SafeRoutes4x strengthens both sides of the safety equation. We provide targeted training for engineers, planners, and infrastructure designers to integrate safety into every stage of mobility planning and design. At the same time, we equip communities, drivers, and pedestrians with knowledge that promotes safer road behavior. Our programs combine technical capacity building, professional education, and public awareness to create a long-term, system-wide shift toward safer mobility for all.

Our programs & initiatives

Training for engineers, planners, and agencies
We deliver specialized technical training that equips professionals with modern tools, methods, and principles for safer transport systems.
Our training covers:
Safe System Approach principles
Road safety engineering methods
Traffic and transport planning techniques
Urban mobility and NMT planning
Infrastructure safety integration
International best practices (iRAP, global road safety standards). These trainings ensure that technical teams can design, assess, and manage road infrastructure with safety as a core requirement.
Workshops on Safe System & Road Safety Design
We conduct hands-on workshops that demonstrate how to apply Safe System thinking to real-world projects.
Workshop themes include:
  • Human-centered road design
  • Safe speed management strategies
  • Safer junction, corridor, and public space design
  • Design audits and safety reviews
  • Practical case studies and on-site demonstrations
  • These workshops translate global principles into practical skills aligned with Rwanda’s mobility context.
Road Safety Campaigns & Community Programs
We work directly with communities to raise awareness and promote safer road behavior.
Our initiatives include:
  • Public education campaigns targeting key risk factors
  • School and youth safety programs
  • Safe School Routes mobilization
  • Community-based NMT awareness
  • Stakeholder engagement sessions
These programs foster shared responsibility and empower communities to contribute to safer mobility environments.
Institutional Support & Advisory Services
We support public and private institutions in integrating road safety into policies, planning, and project delivery.
Our support includes:
  • Policy development and technical advisory
  • Integration of road safety into institutional frameworks
  • Safety management systems development
  • Guidance for compliance with national and international standards
On-site mentoring for project teams and agencies
This support strengthens long-term institutional capacity and ensures sustainable safety outcomes.
