SafeRoutes4x (SR4X) was thrilled to spend September 22 at G.S. Shyorongi, where we delivered a hands-on road safety session designed to empower their primary school students. At this young age, children are among the most vulnerable road users, with many walking to and from school every day.
Our mission was to equip them with the basic, life-saving skills they need to navigate the road safely, all while making the experience fun and memorable.
What They Learned
Through conversation, visual aids, and practice, pupils learned:
- How to Cross the Road Safely: using the “Stop-Look-Listen” rule and only crossing at safe places such as zebra crossings, Elders helping youngsters to cross safely.

2. Walking Rules: Staying on the sidewalk when possible, or on the left side of the road facing traffic, avoid playing on the road, Avoid crossing the edge marking line.
3. Being Visible: Why wearing bright or reflective clothing helps drivers see them, especially at night.
4. Passenger Safety: Always wearing a helmet on a motorcycle and a seatbelt in a car, Avoiding distracting the driver.

5. Safe Crossing Without a Crosswalk: When a crosswalk is absent or ending sidewalk, students were shown how to identify a safe location with a good sight distance, Hazard identification and Blind corner characteristics.
This training provided them with the critical thinking skills to navigate less-controlled environments by choosing a spot with maximum visibility and minimal obstruction.
Lasting Impact
The session ended with a Road Safety Pledge, where children promised to:
“Cross safely, walk safely, and remind friends and family to do the same.”
By learning these simple but life-saving rules early, the pupils are now better equipped to protect themselves and influence those around them. At SR4X, we believe that safe habits formed in childhood are the foundation of safer communities tomorrow.
We are incredibly proud of the G.S. Shyorongi students for their enthusiasm and dedication to road safety. This is just the beginning. We look forward to continuing our work and collaborating with communities to ensure everyone can travel safely.
